Wait! Hear me out on this!
Yeah, they spent the day dealing with the scurrilous story from America's newspaper of record. Hee hee hee hee... Sorry, I can't even type that with a straight face. Does anyone who works outside of a college campus actually take the New York Times seriously anymore? Come on. Anyhoo, I can make a decent argument that the Times story was a boon for McCain.
First, if you actually read it you realize just how vapid the whole thing is. There's absolutely no meat there. Nothing. If you're going to get shot at, much better if the other guy is firing blanks.
Second, it got him some press. The ongoing Clinton-Obama fight certainly divides the Dems, but it also drives McCain off the front pages. Even in a situation like this, there's no such thing as bad publicity. It's a chance to come out fighting. Not a bad thing.
Third, it has helped him with the base. I'm not the first person to say this today, but if it's John McCain versus the New York Times, even those on the right who aren't fans of McCain are going to take his side. Rush and Sean both were pretty favorable, though Rush couldn't resist an I-told-you-so for those, perhaps including McCain himself, who thought that the press would continue to be almost wholly favorable to the McCain. I didn't hear much of Glenn Beck today. What I did hear sounded like some sort of conspiracy theory about how the Times held the story just long enough for McCain to finish off Romney. Buzz... Sorry, Glenn... It's not the NYT's job to get Romney elected. We supported him around here but, for a lot of reasons, he just didn't get the job done this time around.
So, like I said, a pretty good day for John McCain. Of course, too many good days like this will probably finish him off, but one every now and then might not be such a bad thing.
